Are you completely prepared? What the government (Think Ahead) advises for every household

Ben jij compleet voorbereid? Wat de overheid (Denk Vooruit) adviseert voor elk huishouden

We'd rather not assume it, but a power outage lasting days, a flood, or a digital attack on our infrastructure is not unthinkable. The Dutch government, through the campaign 'Think Ahead', advises that every citizen should be able to fend for themselves for at least 48 to 72 hours.

But what does that mean for you specifically? We have listed the most important guidelines.

1. The Emergency Kit: The basis of your safety

According to Think Ahead, a well-stocked emergency kit is essential. If the tap stops giving water or the supermarkets remain closed, you don't want to be empty-handed.

The government advises a minimum of:

  • 3 liters of water per person per day (for drinking and hygiene).

  • Non-perishable food that does not need to be cooked (such as cans, bars, and dry food).

  • A battery-powered or crank radio (tuned to the emergency broadcast channel/regional broadcaster).

  • A flashlight with extra batteries or one that can be charged with a dynamo.

  • First aid kit with a first aid manual.

CompleetVoorbereid's Tip: Our [Premium Emergency Kits] are assembled based on these exact government guidelines. This way, you can be sure you won't forget anything.

2. Information is life-saving

When internet and mobile networks fail, you are cut off from the news. The government emphasizes the importance of an emergency radio. During a crisis, the regional broadcaster is where you'll hear if you need to evacuate or if the water is safe to drink again.

3. What can you do now?

Preparing doesn't have to be complicated. Start with the small things:

  1. Check your supplies: Do you have enough water for 3 days?

  2. Make a plan: Discuss with your family where you will meet if phone communication is not possible.

  3. Stay in touch: Do you know neighbors who might need extra help?
